For over 45 years, filmmakers Shirikiana and Haile Gerima have created a powerful body of work that captures the spirit, struggle, and brilliance of the Black and African diaspora.
The Sankofa Film Archive was founded to preserve this invaluable legacy. a collection of film and mixed media that deserves to be protected, studied, and shared.
Now, we need your help.
We're working to organize and provide public access to these historic materials — not only to honor the past, but to inspire the future. This archive will serve as an essential educational resource and a creative wellspring for emerging filmmakers, artists, and scholars.
Our current facility houses fragile media, including 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm film, as well as reel-to-reel audio recordings. To ensure the long-term preservation and accessibility of this irreplaceable archive, we urgently need to upgrade the space to meet professional archival standards.
